Viña-Cobos El Felino Malbec 2015
Wine AdvocateThe 2015 Felino Malbec mixes grapes from different zones within the province of Mendoza--half from the cooler Valle de Uco, one-third from the classical Luján de Cuyo and some 13% from Maipú. It fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts and a total maceration of 14 days. Malolactic was spontaneous and 10% of the volume matured in new American oak barrels until bottling unfined in February 2016. The natural conditions of the year and the higher percentage of grapes from Valle de Uco helped to achieve a fresher and more lifted wine, where the effect of the oak is also better integrated. It has floral aromas and a sleek texture, with fine, sweet tannins and very good balance. A whopping 357,000 bottles were produced in 2015.
Wine EnthusiastEarthy black-fruit aromas set up a rubbery, heavy palate with plenty of oak and related resin. This tastes mostly of oak and clove, with savory blackberry notes resting at the base. A solid salty choppy finish shows a tight grip and moderate roughness.
Wine SpectatorThe dried red currant and raspberry flavors are matched to notes of hot stone and dried savory herb. White pepper accents show on the supple finish. Drink now through 2019. 15,000 cases made.
