Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti Superiore Le Orme 2016
|Region||Italy, Piedmont, Barbera d'Asti|
Michele Chiarlo sources grapes from strictly selected Barbera vineyards with excellent exposure to produce a superb, balanced wine. The choice vineyards are in the southern area of Asti province, especially the hills around Nizza Monferrato. Temperature controlled maceration and fermentation on the skins yields the dark, rich color that is typical of great Barberas. The wine is aged in large French oak casks before release.
Fragrant purple flower, baking spice and black-skinned berry aromas mingle with an earthy whiff of forest floor. On the succulent palate, supple tannins and fresh acidity balance juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice. It's easy drinking and savory. Drink through 2020.
This wine is the result of new clones and new rootstock: A lot of work is being done in the world of Barbera. This is a grape that hates cold rainy months, because the berries swell up too much. Barbera can jump up one degree in alcohol in just a few days-you need to be very careful. This is a very successful expression, with balanced fruit and luscious berry. The 2016 Barbera d'Asti le Orme ages in steel and bottle for 18 months, while maceration times are measured at up to ten days to maintain those fresh aromas.
There is a serious side to this fruity red, with stiff, dusty tannins putting the brakes on the plum and cherry jam flavors. Accents of earth and chocolate add depth. Drink now through 2021. 35,000 cases made.
